Senator Warren Applauds Passage of Bipartisan Legislation to Expand GI Bill

Warren Successfully Fought to Include Additional Protections and Benefits for Massachusetts Veterans

Washington, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) today applauded legislation passed by Congress to expand the GI Bill. Senator Warren was an original cosponsor of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017 and worked to ensure it included legislation she had previously introduced, including a provision to help restore benefits to Massachusetts veterans who were cheated by for-profit colleges. The legislation also includes several bipartisan provisions sponsored by Senator Warren to expand benefits for veterans and their families.

"After World War II, this grateful nation offered returning soldiers the first GI Bill to help them get a college education," said Senator Warren. "Since WWII, Congress has updated the GI Bill program when necessary, and I'm very glad to support this bipartisan legislation to modernize and expand the GI Bill again."

"This legislation includes several provisions that I fought hard for to help vets in Massachusetts, including expanded eligibility for Purple Heart recipients previously shut out of the GI Bill, better Yellow Ribbon educational benefits for families of fallen servicemembers, increased coverage for certain reservists who had been denied benefits, and restored benefits for vets who were cheated by Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech," continued the senator. "President Trump should immediately sign this bipartisan bill into law."

The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017 passed the House and Senate with unanimous approval.
